Joyfully Embracing Our Mission
St. Clare School Family News | 20 October 2019
Come! Live in the Light!
You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?
It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.
You are the light of the world.
A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket;
it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house.
Just so, your light must shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father.
~ Matthew 5:13-16
Dear St. Clare School Families,
Once again, this community came together for a family-friendly gathering with an incredible sampling of cuisines from around the world. I’m pretty sure I tried most of them and they were all so very tasty!
Friday’s Multicultural Feast in its new venue brought together such a spirit of cooperation to provide so much joy and camaraderie. Gratitude and thanksgiving to Sigrid Jacobsen, Margarita Guizar, Ravisha Mathur, Xochitl Foldenauer, Kevin Farmer, Angel Tañedo, their families and all the wonderful volunteers and chefs who shared their talents. Thank you, too, to our Ms.Cherell, Ms. Teresea and Ms. Valerye, as well as Matt Dutra and Larry Heller for their help and support. Love permeated this night!

JAMBA JUICE PROCEEDS SUPPORT LEARNING AND LOVING EDUCATION CENTER IN MORGAN HILL
There are five more Fridays left to support Student Ambassadors with their outreach for Learning and Loving Education Center in Morgan Hill. The Center provides education to immigrant women and their preschool-aged children. Please find the link on ParentSquare post: https://www.parentsquare.com/feeds/1858123
We are very proud of Justin and Anthony and our Student Ambassadors for persevering and helping each other out to provide this opportunity for our students. We are grateful for our parent volunteers for helping each Friday.
DID YOU KNOW…
...that our middle school teachers make themselves available during lunch to our students for activities and encounters like VR viewings and fun card games?
...that some of our teachers hold class “meetings” to check in with one another to reduce anxiety, promote trust and establish a “safe space” to articulate emotions?
...that our teachers engage students in a variety of learning opportunities aligned with lesson objectives because research has shown that doing so positively impacts student learning?
HALLOWEEN EVENTS AND PARTICULARS
On Thursday, October 31, students may come to school already dressed in Halloween costumes. We are asking families to refrain from parking on Washington Street as we will be using the street for our parade.
The day will start as usual with morning assembly. After the morning assembly, volunteers will set up on the elementary blacktop for the party and the hall for the middle school dance. Students will have recess indoors at 9:45 A.M. At 10 A.M., Student Council will lead students to take their positions on Washington Street for the Halloween Parade. Siblings who are not (yet) St. Clare students are welcome to join in the parade. The party and dance will begin immediately following the parade.
Halloween Costume Guidelines
Come to school in costume with make-up and hair all ready. There will be no time to put them on or get ready at school.
Costumes must be modest, appropriate for a TK-8 Catholic school.
Costumes must not be scary for 4 year olds.
Students may wear masks BUT no gory or scary masks, please!
Students may wear face paint or make up BUT no bloody or grotesque paint or make up, please!
Students MAY NOT have any sort of weapon as part of the costume.
If you are still not sure if the costume is appropriate, it probably isn’t.
Stay tuned for information from PTG Halloween Party chairs.
UNIFORM CORNER
Merry Mart is offering long pants in a softer, more breathable fabric.
New this year: Fine gauge V-Neck logo sweater as part of the formal uniform.
Coming soon: Fleece zip-up logo jacket.
Please join me in the Faculty Room for A Cup with the Principal on Wednesday, Oct. 24 immediately after morning assembly until about 9 A.M. Let us use this encounter to get to know one another and to have a conversation about what you may be wondering about or something you may be seeking to understand. (I promise I will have coffee and tea for everyone who comes!)
This Sunday’s readings ask us to persevere, to pray always without becoming weary and to remember that even Moses needed Aaron and Hur to hold his hands up as he grew tired, for to whom shall our help come if not from God.
The Beraki family reports that Macda, with your prayers, right thought and good action is doing much better and cannot wait to return to her “home” at St. Clare. Whatever challenge one of our family members face, we must persevere together without becoming weary: all we need do is lift up our eyes to the Lord who made heaven and earth with faith, with hope and with love.
May the week ahead reveal to you the love of God in the most wondrous ways!

Becoming Mujeres: A Joint Venture from a St. Clare Mother and Her Middle School Daughter
Turning challenges into life-giving opportunities for our teen daughters
Teen years are challenging. Our daughters are not kids anymore, but they are not quite adults either. Social media, social exclusion, and body shaming are some of the social pressures girls face daily. Did you know that according to a national study, 94% of teen girls have been body shamed? Some of our daughters have already experienced these pressures. They are hurtful, and it makes a girl feel sad, depressed, and ashamed of her body. As parents, we often feel helpless. I certainly did, until I had a heartfelt conversation with my daughter, Lupita. We both decided that we needed to do something about it; this is how Becoming Mujeres was born.
Becoming Mujeres is an organization that offers workshops on the ways social pressures foster a culture that reduces a teen girl’s agency to rubble. Our goal is to break the cycle of shame and silence one teen girl at a time. While Becoming Mujeres focuses on empowering Latina teens, it is not exclusively for Latinas; it is open to all teen girls.
